There is no way to deny the fact that most games tied to big budget movies are terrible! After all, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) single-handedly brought the entire contemporary gaming industry to a temporary shutdown. That being said, it’s not all bad.
In fact, there were a few film-to-game adaptations that were actually pretty good. Other than that, we also have video games that movies have only inspired and thus, they are not direct adaptations. Some of those games are huge successes. Keeping the good in mind, here are three games based on movies that are worth playing even today.
Ratchet & Clank (2016)
It’s a bit tricky when it comes to 2016’s excellent PlayStation exclusive Ratchet & Clank. There was both a movie and a game released within the same timeframe and they were indeed tied to each other. Now, the movie was inspired by the much older video game series, while the game was inspired and based on the movie itself. So yes, confusing as it maybe, Ratchet & Clank is indeed a movie adaptation that was received exceptionally well by gamers.
GoldenEye 007 (1997)
GoldenEye 007 was released two years after the movie GoldenEye was released in 1995, so it was definitely not a promotional campaign for the film exactly. Nevertheless, the extra time must have done wonders because it turned out to be the best FPS on the Nintendo 64 console ever. The GoldenEye 007 multiplayer mods are still enjoyable even today on PC.
Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020)
Is the Mafia game series based in the same universe as The Godfather movies? No, it is not. As it happens, there are two fully licensed games called The Godfather (1991 & 2006) which carry that honour. The Godfather (2006) is in truth, a good game in its own right so you may want to check it out too. However, what 2K Games has done in their remake of the 2002 Mafia game of the same name is simply phenomenal.
The game was inspired by The Godfather movies, as mentioned by the developers themselves. It’s a different story altogether but it better represents the theme of The Godfather series of films than any game that came before or since. Not that you really need a special game to benefit from gaming keyboards, but you will certainly enjoy a shooter a lot more with one. Go with a Cherry MX Red or Speed Silver as they are unbeatable in games where speedy reactions are a necessity.
Jurassic World Evolution (2018)
Jurassic World was released in 2015 and the movie series is still ongoing. Therefore, Jurassic World Evolution is not exactly tied to the movies, but it probably shares the same universe as we do have Dr. Ian Malcolm, aka Jef Goldblum in the game as a voice actor. It has all the licenses needed to bring the old Jurassic Park to life in your own imagination and design.
The game is a fantasy park management and strategy simulation which is unmatched in its ability to make us gawk! The newer release, Jurassic Park Evolution 2 is still in the process of fleshing out with DLCs, but the original is now a complete game with all the teeth, talons, and genes you could possibly need!
