Movie Review
Ranbir Kapoor isn’t new to a romantic comedy (rom-com). In fact, he has aced the genre several times (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Bachna Ae Haseeno) in his long and versatile filmography. But then, it’s also been a while since we saw RK flaunt his dimples and charm his lady love. Between battling demons in a fantasy world and riding horses in period films, it’s a refreshing relief to see him in a setting that’s not only familiar but also his home ground. But wait, it isn’t exactly a bed of roses for the actor when he makes his debut in Luv Ranjan’s universe where the boy’s perspective trumps over the girls.
Remember R Madhavan and Bipasha Basu’s Jodi Breakers? Yes, so one of the two is a very trendy version of the characters from the 2012 film and is busy breaking relationships. But one fine day, he falls in love with a woman who is equally bold in her opinions and dominating than him. Dimple Kapadia has to be the best part about this movie. The finally 20 minutes are sheer chaos and it is her that makes them so much joyous. Her jokes land on point supported by Boney Kapoor surprisingly are so hilarious that they kind of compensate for everything that is a drawback about the film.
Mickey’s best pal played by popular stand-up comic Anubhav Singh Bassi, who has to live with the best punch-lines being handed out to the hero. Shraddha Kapoor tries to make the best of the sort of thankless roles women have in Luv Ranjan’s movies. Her attempt at trying to her own person, and striking out for independence firmly scotched by the film’s decisive pivot to conservative family values.
